What do the following sentences have in common?
“She just smiled and gave me a Vegemite sandwich?”
“I look incredible. I wear your Granddad’s clothes”
“I’m lightning on my feet.”
“Desmond has a barrow in the marketplace.”
“I’ve been reading books of old, the legends and the myths.”
These – and many more like them – have been entertaining and puzzling students and staff alike during our Rocktober Music Lyric Challenge in the Arthur Holt Library.
Library staff thought it would be a fun distraction for students in the midst of final exams and also an enjoyable challenge for students starting their new academic year. It’s proven to be a hit with boys (and staff) across all ages as they battle it out to be crowned “AHL Lyric Champion”.
Starting with some relatively easy song lyrics, the boys rose to the challenge and completed the first section within a week.
Subsequent challenges revealed the boys were much more in tune (pun intended) with song lyrics than we gave them credit for and also we discovered they must have downloaded their parents Spotify 70’s, 80’s and 90’s playlists or secretly listen to Smooth FM.
Students from both middle and senior schools were giving the challenge a red hot go and although their answers were not always correct, they discovered trying was half the fun.
The Year 12 boys threw down the gauntlet “Please give us some older, more difficult and random ones.”
We upped the ante and offered up lyrics from Led Zeppelin, Hilltop Hoods, Aretha Franklin, Daddy Cool, Midnight Oil, Simon and Garfunkel, Joe Cocker, Macklemore and The Clash. The gents did themselves proud and were able to name, sing and even dance to a few tunes.
If you are looking for a quick, fun distraction from study, a challenge to test your music knowledge, or just to have a laugh with friends as you try to work out who made that Vegemite sandwich, come over to the Think, Play, and Discuss board near the staff collaboration room.
New challenges are currently offered twice weekly and cover many music genres, decades and styles.
You may even be able to solve this one –
“I don’t know why you think you’ll end up in the sky Happy as Larry while riding sheep on clouds.”
