The Secret History by Donna Tartt is the book chosen by #trinitygrammarschool Year 12 prefect Miles as his favourite book.

Miles said The Secret History is an engaging read with many plot twists. He said the characters were interesting and well-developed.

Miles said fans of mysteries will enjoy this book.

Happy World Poetry Day !

The #arthurholtlibrary is celebrating World Poetry Day today with a host of activities for staff and students.

Why not try a haiku or a limerick on our magnetic poetry board? We've had some incredible efforts so far.

Or come to the black out poetry area and try your hand at creating a black out poem from some of our weeded resources.

If you fancy yourself as a music guru, try to guess whether our cut outs are poems or songs.

While you're in the Library, make sure you say Happy Birthday to our Head Teaching Learning Librarian, Ms Courtenay, who is celebrating her special day today.

Oh what a beautiful book this is. One dog changes

Oh what a beautiful book this is.

One dog changes the life of everyone who takes him in on his journey to reunite with his first owner in this inspiring tribute to the bond between humans and dogs and the life-affirming power of connection.

In honour of World Poetry Day next week, the #arth

In honour of World Poetry Day next week, the #arthurholtlibrary has put up some challenges for the boys.

"Is it a poem or is it a love song?" will test their knowledge of songs and poetry. We think if you're an Ed Sheeran, @hshq or @fredagainagainagainagainagain fan, you might have a head start !

Then we challenged the students to write a magnetic poem on our THINK, PLAY, DISCUSS board.

The results have been amusing...

Our #trinitygrammarschool Junior School celebrated

Our #trinitygrammarschool Junior School celebrated All Together Day this week. It was a chance for staff and students to celebrate the diversity of cultures in our school. Boys chose to wear clothes which represented their family heritage, whether it be traditional dress or contemporary outfits.

Staff and students shared a greeting in their mother tongue and we were entertained by Year 3 singing a traditional Torres Strait Islander song “Inanay”.

Our #trinitygrammarschool vice-captain, Ty loved E

Our #trinitygrammarschool vice-captain, Ty loved Eddie Jaku's The Happiest Man on Earth.

Ty read this extraordinary biography during the Covid lockdowns and said the book helped him cope with the isolation and uncertainty of the time.

Ty said the book's overarching theme of optimism and resilience was reassuring during those uncertain times in lockdown. Ty said Eddie's story is one that everyone should read. He would recommend The Happiest Man on Earth to readers of all ages.

If you’ve heard of the Ides of March, you probably know you’re supposed to beware them.
Why?
In ancient Rome, the Ides of March was equivalent to our March 15. In the Roman calendar, this date corresponded to several religious observances. The Romans considered the Ides of March a deadline for settling debts. It is also the day on which Roman Emperor Julius Caesar was assassinated in 44 b.c.e.
For this reason, it has become associated with bad omens, betrayal, and misfortune.

In our modern world, if you’ve heard of the Ides of March, it’s probably thanks to William Shakespeare. In his play Julius Caesar, a soothsayer attracts Caesar’s attention and tells him:
Beware the ides of March.

Histories of Australian science largely overlook w

Histories of Australian science largely overlook women. Their absence gives the impression that, until recently, there were no Australian women scientists. But this is far from true: women formed a much larger proportion of the scientific community from the 1900s to the 1940s in Australia than in Britain or the United States, and numbers have only grown since. Why don’t women scientists make it into history books? Because women’s work is less cited than men’s and more likely to be forgotten.

Taking to the Field is the first comprehensive history of Australian women in science from colonial to contemporary times. This untold story shows that women have played a greater role than is commonly recognised. From the first years of colonisation, women engaged in myriad scientific endeavours, ranging from botany to genetics to organic chemistry. There was a vibrant culture of women in science in the years up to 1945 – as academics, researchers, lab workers, teachers, writers and activists for science-based social reform. They outnumbered men in some fields.

This is not a straightforward tale of progress or a simple celebration of unsung heroines. Some women were involved in darker episodes of colonial science and eugenics. Few women of colour were given opportunities for scientific exploration. But within these limitations, many remarkable individuals illuminated our understanding of the world. From the first female science graduate, Edith Dornwell, to Nobel laureate molecular biologist Elizabeth Blackburn, Australian women have had an outsized influence. The botanical collection of Western Australian Georgiana Molloy, the discoveries of Tasmanian-born molecular biologist Elizabeth Blackburn and the research of Melbourne zoologist Georgina Sweet all tell a story: how Australian women in science have transformed the world.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY DR SEUSS.

Dr. Seuss’s birthday is celebrated on March 2 and it celebrates both the birthday of Theodor Seuss Geisel and in the USA, it celebrates the National Education Association to endorse the importance of reading.

A lesser-known fact about Dr. Seuss is that he created the word nerd. The first documented use of the word was in the 1950 book he wrote titled “If I Ran the Zoo” about a boy named Gerald McGrew who visits a zoo and ponders what it would be like if he ran it. So In a way, Dr. Seuss is partly responsible for nerd culture.
