The Y7 Readers Club has been meeting every Tuesday at lunchtime since the beginning of 2019. It’s convened by me and Mrs Weber from the junior school library. This was initially conceived of as a way of supporting the transition of some of our newer students to the senior school library spaces and collections, and as means of emphasising and encouraging a strong reading culture in this cohort.
After a wonderful Lent-term’s-worth of getting to know each-other and recommending books in the most ardent terms to one another, and trying to persuade each other that our genre of preference is the ‘only stuff worth reading!- we have decided to embark on a collective reading experience which is bound to have us (literally) all on the same page feeling some feelings!
‘Goodnight Mr Tom’ by Michelle Magorian is an award winning classic of children’s literature. Set during World War II, it is the story of a relationship between a stuck-.in-his ways curmudgeon (Mr Tom) and an underfed and anxious young evacuee (Willy Beech).
Watch this space to hear our opinions along the way! (and read along if you like – every public library will have a copy). We plan to regularly record our thoughts as we progress through the novel and post a final podcast-style review at the end!
