This week marked 72 years since the US dropped an Atomic Bomb on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima & Nagasaki.  Around 80,000 people were killed from the direct blast, with 60,000 more people dying by the end of the year due to radiation poisoning.

Last year, Miss Mileto paid a visit to Japan. Part of her trip included traveling to Hiroshima, where she got the opportunity to visit the Peace Museum.

The peace museum contained many relics and artefacts from the aftermath of the bomb, including the paper cranes of Sadako Sasaki. Sadako was a young girl who survived the bombing, however 10 years later she developed leukaemia – a side effect of the radiation that lingered in Hiroshima.

Sadako folded paper cranes because it was said that if you reached 1000 the universe would grant you a single wish. Sadako managed to fold 644 cranes before passing away. Her family and friends folded the remaining 356.
